A Tale of Two Capitals: Women in Politics in Helsinki, Finland and Lisbon, Portugal

In recent years, the visibility and representation of women in politics have been on the rise globally. Two European capitals, Helsinki, Finland, and Lisbon, Portugal, have been at the forefront of this movement, with women making significant strides in the political arena. Helsinki, the capital of Finland, has a strong tradition of gender equality and women's empowerment. Finland consistently ranks high in global gender equality indexes, and this is reflected in its political landscape. The Finnish Parliament, known as the Eduskunta, has a relatively high proportion of female members compared to other countries. In the most recent parliamentary elections in 2019, women accounted for 47% of the seats, showing a steady increase in female representation over the years. Moreover, Finland made history in 2000 by electing its first female president, Tarja Halonen, who served two terms in office. This landmark moment paved the way for more women to enter politics and inspired a new generation of female leaders in the country. On the other side of Europe, in Lisbon, Portugal, women have also been making significant strides in politics. Portugal has seen a gradual increase in female representation in its Parliament, known as the Assembleia da República. In the 2019 elections, women accounted for 34% of the seats, marking a notable improvement from previous years. Portugal also made history in 2006 by electing its first female prime minister, José Sócrates. While women are still underrepresented in some areas of Portuguese politics, there is a growing recognition of the importance of gender diversity and inclusivity in decision-making processes. Both Helsinki and Lisbon serve as examples of cities where women are breaking barriers and challenging traditional gender norms in the political sphere. While there is still work to be done to achieve full gender equality, the progress made in these two capitals is a testament to the power of female leadership and the importance of diverse representation in politics. As we look to the future, it is essential to continue supporting and empowering women in politics, both in Helsinki, Finland, Lisbon, Portugal, and beyond. By working towards greater gender balance and inclusivity, we can create more just and equitable societies for all. For more information about this: https://www.enemigo.org
